Disputed facts

William Hallock son of Peter Hallock came to New England possibly with his father as an adult. Sources differ as to whether Peter Hallock emigrated, and who he married as second wife. Apparently the traditional stories of William and Peter have been mixed.

Biography

William Hallock was one of the first twelve men to arrive in Mattituck during the old Aquebogue division of the land from Southold to Mattituck Creek and ran from Peconic Bay on the south to the Long Island Sound on the north. He received two lots (about 400 acres). Sone sources say his father Petter bought the land but there is no proof of this. In the original lists of settlers William Hallocke is named but not his father.[1]

William gave his son-in-law Richard Howell a strip along the future town line from the Bay to the Sound, 150 acres. William Hallock purchased from Thomas Mapes in 1667, the original homelot of John Tucker and lands to the north in Southold Village. His estate in 1675 was valued at 361 pounds & 10 shillings.

William Hallock (spelled Halliok in documents) left a large personal estate in 1684. His will was dated Feb. 10, 1682 and proved October 21, 1684 leaving property to his wife, four sons & five daughters. To sons Thomas & Peter, the farm where he lived; Thomas the western half except for the swamp lot and Peter the eastern half including the swamp and his dwelling house. To son William he left land near Southold; to John land on Wading River (John's wife was a Quaker, something that greatly displeased John's father). The daughters named in his will were: Margaret, Martha, Sarah, Elizabeth, & Abigail. [2]

An alternate death place: Southold, Suffolk, New York A Will has not been found.

[asterisk notes further data has corroborated the above]

William and Margaret settled on the land purchased by his father, Peter, in what is now West Mattituck, L.I. He wills the land where he lived to his sons, Thomas and Peter; to his son, William, land near Southold; and to son John, land in Wading River. He was greatly displeased with John because he had married a Quakeress and joined the Society of Friends. The old homestead in West Mattituck is still owned by a descendant, George Omar Hallock, and the west side by a descendant of Richard Howell, Miss Elizabeth Howell." --A Hallock Genealogy, 1975 special edition, Pg. 621.

research notes

Anderson — ‘Immigrants to New England III:201’ at the end of the entry for John Halliack: "Halliack is also seen as a variant spelling in the family of William Hallock of Southold, but this passenger does not fit here either."

Questionable bio from A Hallock Genealogy: "William Hallock. Only son of the original Peter Hallock. Was son of Peter Hallock by his first wife, who died in England. William was born in England about 1610. He died in Aquebogue, or West Mattituck, as now known, in 1684. His burial place is not known. William married Margaret Howell, daughter by a former marriage of Widow Howell, his father’s second wife, who accompanied him to Southold, L.I. [Long Island], upon his second visit. “
